Tuva and Canthe arrive in Arondine and Canthe goes to find Wulf, returning with news of his survival at sea. This confirms to Tuva that he is her son, as his survival in the frigid waters off Hróth means that he possesses siden. In her moment of vulnerability, Canthe kisses her, and though Tuva initially kisses back, she stops it.

In the night, Glorian is visited by an image of her mother, who informs her that a coming star will defeat the wyrms, but that Glorian must connect her to Dumai, while keeping the connection secret.

Einlek gives them the task of traveling to a northern outpost to retrieve the rest of their lith and any remaining soldiers. As Fyredel’s return draws near and Glorian’s pregnancy becomes more apparent, she cuts her hair to remind herself of her own independence before going to the Virtues Council and informing them that it is time to descend into the caves and mines. That night, she ventures out to a nearby lookout and watches as Fyredel burns Arondine to the ground.

Part 3, Chapter 73 Summary: “North”

Dumai does her best to keep her defenses up in the face of Nikeya’s charm as they travel West. She continues to hear from Glorian but is warned by Furtia that it may not be who she thinks it is. When a spear hits Furtia from a watch tower, Dumai and Nikeya are thrown off and lose sight of the dragon. Helpless, they seek safety in a cave and while sheltering, Nikeya demands to know why Dumai can’t trust her.

Part 3, Chapter 74 Summary: “North”

As Thrit and Wulf reach the outskirts of the outpost, Nikeya admits to Dumai that her father initially tasked her with seducing Dumai but insists that she truly loves her. They kiss, and Dumai opens up to Nikeya about her feelings for women.

Dumai hears her dream companion and leaves the cave, seeing twin peaks in the distance that match a vision from her dreams. They begin walking towards it, crossing a glacier to reach an outpost. As they near the buildings, they find the bodies of plague victims and are charged by a survivor.

Wulf and Thrit reach the outpost and see Karlsten attacking Dumai and Nikeya. He wounds Dumai and turns his attention to Wulf, telling him that he killed everyone at the outpost because of the outbreak. Furtia returns and is attacked by Karlsten, who is crushed by the dragon.

Tuva and Canthe arrive to see the death of the Karlsten, and Tuva engages Furtia. As they fight, Canthe rushes to Dumai, asking for the stone and admitting that it was her speaking to Dumai. She is flung away by Furtia, who collects Dumai and flees. In the aftermath of the struggle, Tuva pulls Wulf from a crevice in the glacier, taking her first look at him since he was a baby. She calls him Armul.

As they near Seiiki, Dumai hears the real Glorian in her mind, but distrusting the voice, she shuts her out. Upon their arrival, they find the capital on fire and the wyrms attacking it.

Dumai storms into the court to find Suzumai on the throne, as the River Lord replaced her father after he supposedly succumbed to the plague. Dumai, wishing to fight for Seiiki rather than a throne, announces that she will make her own court elsewhere and fight to protect the people. On her way out, she apologizes to Nikeya and asks her to come with her, but Nikeya refuses.

On Mount Ipyeda, Dumai’s grandmother approves of her proposed rival court. The Empress wonders if the Noziken are meant to continue ruling. She tells Dumai that she does not expect her to have an heir but does expect her to be the person she is meant to be, no matter the implications it has for their dynasty.

Part 3, Chapters 62-82 Analysis

Nikeya, Dumai, and Kanifa are in the Lacustrine Court when Kanifa expresses his worry that Nikeya is seeking to control her. Dumai assures him that she does not believe Nikeya will hurt them. He wonders aloud if Dumai has fallen under her spell, revealing to her that he knows she loves women, just as he loves her. Again, LGBTQIA+ Identity and Family Unity plays a role in the novel, as Kanifa, who has come to be Dumai’s brother, comforts and counsels her about love. He holds a love for her that she does not return, but he never faults her for it, choosing to be supportive rather than spiteful. He worries for her and distrusts Nikeya’s motivations: “There will be other women. Of all the people you could love, do not choose the one who is using you” (556). He wants her to have a happy future where she is loved and valued for who she is, not who she can be or what she can do. This sentiment is echoed later when Thrit reveals his love for Wulf. When Thrit kisses him and walks away, Wulf sees a path forward: “Wulf glimpsed a sweet and unexpected future, far away” (677). Wulf is lost throughout the novel, and in a few moments, he meets his mother and discovers his past, while also discovering a love that will guide him through the coming darkness. The family support and openness toward these romantic discoveries again speaks to LGBTQIA+ Identity and Family Unity. In a fantasy world, the hurdles of coming out are lessened, and the societal judgments are nonexistent, as all relationships are allowed within the realms. As such, real-world boundaries are dissolved within the novel, and the characters can grow more deeply because of the elimination of societal pressures. With the support of their loved ones, LGBTQIA+ characters see their coming out as a hopeful realization of self, which is not always true in the real world.

Like Glorian, Dumai feels the constraints of monarchy, influencing her approach to the throne and her relationships with others. Unlike the council in Inys, Dumai’s grandmother takes a different approach to the subject of a Noziken heir: “I sense your path does not lead you to motherhood. Should I—your grandmother—force you to go against your nature, all for the sake of preserving a name?” (695-96). Dumai’s grandmother will not sacrifice Dumai’s happiness and autonomy for an heir, rather letting their dynasty die than force her granddaughter into a life she does not want. Monarchical Constraints on Body Autonomy demonstrates the hold monarchy has on women’s bodies. The Grand Empress would rather break this toxic cycle than sacrifice her granddaughter’s well-being, leading Dumai to serve as a powerful foil to Glorian, and the Grand Empress contrasts greatly with Glorian’s mother, Sabran. Across the Abyss, Glorian seeks to use her pregnancy to legitimize her power and inspire her people even if she cannot fight as she wishes. She makes her pregnancy public: “[…] I will ask you to join me on the battlefield—and in return, I vow to you, I will give you a Princess of Inys, fruit of the unending vine, to shield you from the Nameless One” (667). She equates the coming battle with the wyrms to her own struggle of providing an heir, aligning her people and herself. She also declares her intent to fight, wanting to lead her people in battle and not be held back by her bodily duty to the throne. In this regard, both Dumai and Glorian subvert expectations for women, but they do this through very different means: Dumai will not produce an heir while Glorian has legitimized her rule through her pregnancy. While Glorian plans to be an active ruler, she has nonetheless been forced to compromise some of her body autonomy in becoming pregnant, but this decision is softened by the fact that it was with a partner of her choice. Moreover, carrying on the family line holds greater weight for Glorian, as her line is credited with keeping the wyrms at bay.

Tuva embodies the power of Motherhood as a Guiding Force in these chapters, demonstrating to Wulf that her love acts almost as a compass, leading her to him because she could not give up hope once she learned he was alive. In the concluding chapters of Part 3, Wulf and Tuva reunite after nearly two decades of being apart. Both carry an immense amount of pain, but their time together provides the opportunity for both to heal. In the immediate aftermath of their reunion, Wulf recalls a feeling of love and a vague memory of Tuva. Despite not remembering what happened to him, he carries the love Tuva feels for him. Additionally, she left the Priory, her sisters, her partner, and Siyu to find him. This guiding force of motherhood leads to their reunion, which represents a turning point for both characters: They can begin to heal, and Wulf can let the past go in order to look to the future. He will forge his own identity rather than letting it be defined by his past, which is the direct result of the healing found through Tuva’s unwavering devotion to him as a mother.
