Winter compares Darkstalker’s “tricks with words” to Qibli (193). They watch Moon and Kinkajou discuss Darkstalker in the Obsidian Mirror. Moon asserts the giant dragon’s goodness and Kinkajou angrily leaves.Next, they watch Darkstalker as he begins giving superpowers to the NightWings. Finally, they view Tsunami and discover she’s being held prisoner, but they are unsure where or who is holding her captive. They decide to return to Jade Mountain.

Part 2, Chapter 17 Summary

Qibli and Winter find Anemone as they are returning to Jade Mountain. She is enchanted and unable to speak. She is also hiding from Darkstalker. Qibli gives her an earring that breaks Darkstalker’s enchantment. Anemone notices that Qibli is wearing her weather-changing bracelets. She tries to take them back, but Qibli convinces her to let him keep them in case they are needed to fight Darkstalker. Anemone agrees to lead them to the Night Kingdom.

Part 2, Chapter 18 Summary

As they fly towards the Night Kingdom, Anemone updates Qibli and Winter about the power that Moon has as Darkstalker’s friend. She admits that Darkstalker kicked her out of the Night Kingdom when she got into a fight with Moon.

Qibli encourages them to hurry, anxious to get to Moon. They arrive and sneak into the palace where they stop to spy on Darkstalker. Qibli is surprised by the normalcy of the scene they witness. Qibli considers why the NightWings are so loyal to Darkstalker. He reflects on their lack of power in the world and compares it to his. Qibli and Winter watch Darkstalker give a group of dragons super strength. They realize that he is preparing an army.

Part 2, Chapter 19 Summary

They look for Moon. Kinkajou surprises Qibli before mentioning that she has seen a MudWing around the palace. Qibli realizes that Shapeshifter and Vulture must be in the Night Kingdom.

They find Shapeshifter and discuss how he feels about his daughter, Peril. He is unconcerned because he feels betrayed that Peril turned him in for his crimes. Qibli points out that Shapeshifter betrayed Peril first, and Shapeshifter responds that Peril “betrayed him more” (230). Qibli steals Shapeshifter’s animus-touched scroll pieces to counter his magic and remove the danger he poses to them before moving on.

Part 2, Chapter 20 Summary

Qibli finds Moon in the library. He mentions that he loves her interest in books. She says she loves his interest in dragons and how they think. Moon reveals that she’s been researching the possible meaning of the prophecy. Qibli explains his earring and asks her to wear one. She agrees, but it turns out that she was not enchanted after all.

Darkstalker arrives to speak with Moon. He welcomes Qibli before noticing that Moon is wearing an earring like Qibli’s that protects her from Darkstalker’s spells. They discuss trust and Darkstalker stares at Qibli, reading his futures. Darkstalker takes them to meet a dragon that he introduces as Clearsight.

Part 2, Chapter 21 Summary

Darkstalker explains he and Clearsight will marry the next day. Clearsight stares adoringly at Darkstalker before he guides her away. Qibli and Moon are flabbergasted by the interaction. Clearsight is Darkstalker’s former lover who betrayed him long ago to save Pyrrhia. She has apparently returned to the Night Kingdom.

Qibli ad Moon meet up with Winter, who is happy to see Moon is wearing the earring. He becomes angry when he realizes that she still thinks Darkstalker is good. Qibli tries to mediate between Winter and Moon. Winter becomes angry at Qibli. He explains why Darkstalker’s spell was evil. He reveals the IceWing plague.

Part 2, Chapter 22 Summary

Anemone, Kinkajou, and Winter list the evil things that Darkstalker has done to convince Moon that he is evil. They become angry when she remains steadfast that the giant dragon has good in him, and they become angry at Qibli when he defends Moon.

They make plans to stop Darkstalker. They split up, and Moon goes with Qibli to confront Darkstalker while instructing Winter to remain behind. Qibli and Moon spy on Darkstalker and learn he has apparently enchanted Clearsight, though he is unhappy with the results because she does not behave like the dragon he loved. He laments how much he misses Clearsight, despite her betrayal. Moon explains this is the good that she sees in him. Qibli agrees but adds that Darkstalker is still mostly evil.

Part 2, Chapter 23 Summary

Qibli realizes that Darkstalker did not enchant Clearsight but rather enchanted another dragon to act like Clearsight. Moon confronts Darkstalker about his actions. He warns her that they must stay friends because any future where they become enemies will be bad. He suddenly realizes the IceWing plague has failed, and he must now challenge them to a war. He rushes out.

Part 2, Chapter 24 Summary

Moon and Qibli split up to finish several tasks. Qibli comes across a mysterious female NightWing, Foeslayer, who is Darkstalker’s mother. She questions him before giving him an enchanted hourglass called a soulreader. Qibli’s answers demonstrate that he considers Darkstalker a villain but with the potential for goodness. Foeslayer entrusts Qibli with the device because of the empathy he demonstrates. She says that he will need the hourglass to confront Darkstalker.

Part 2 Analysis

The action in Part 2, “King of Shadows,” takes place in the hidden NightWing Kingdom, and Darkstalker moves to the foreground in Qibli’s journey for Identity and Self-Discovery. Like Part 1, the title of Part 2 suggests Darkstalker’s significance in the two roles he fills in the novel. He becomes king of the NightWings, but his position as a shadow character becomes more pronounced as well.

Within the hero’s journey, the NightWing kingdom symbolizes the abyss, a place of death and rebirth for Qibli. The darkness and mystery represent the netherworld. Instead of a challenge or temptation, the action is largely symbolic and represents Qibli’s desires and insecurities as illustrated through his interactions with the shadow world. The manner of confrontation foreshadows the resolution of the internal and external conflicts in the novel, highlighting Qibli’s tendency towards observation and reflection.

Qibli’s empathy and perspective become more complex in Part 2. He considers the antagonist with a more open mind. While Qibli’s reflections during Part 1 focus on the comparisons between himself and Darkstalker, his reflections in Part 2 focus on gaining a better understanding of Darkstalker’s character and point of view.

Moon and her unceasing attempts to convince her friends of the goodness in Darkstalker are important to Qibli’s willingness to empathize with Darkstalker. Darkstalker’s role is the antagonist, but he is also a shadow archetype. The shadow often includes an element of good because of the relationship between the protagonist and the shadow. When she sees Darkstalker suffering and confused because of his love of Clearsight, she explains, “That’s the dragon I see […] underneath the other dragon” (269). Qibli responds that “underneath the brainwashing genocidal murderer is a very lonely brainwashing genocidal murderer” (269). While humorous, Qibli demonstrates a growing empathy with the dark representation of himself.

Because of the its emphasis on Identity and Self-Discovery and the metaphoric confrontation with his shadow, Chapter 16 is the first of several chapters that are heavy with dialogue and internal revelations. These conversations mainly occur between Qibli and Moon and Qibli and Winter, who fills the role of the helper within the hero’s journey. Moon and Winter reveal opposite sides of certain thematic issues, allowing Qibli to obtain a more nuanced understanding of their world and his place in it.

Many of these internal revelations are extensions of elements of Part 1. For example, Winter compares Qibli’s cleverness and mastery of words to Vulture’s. He also compares his abilities to Darkstalker’s. Realizations such as this are uncomfortable for Qibli, but they represent important moments in the theme Identity and Self-Discovery as well as Darkstalker’s characterization.

In Chapter 18, Qibli’s reflections turn toward tribal issues of Power, Corruption, and the Abuse of Power and Loyalty, Family, and Friendship. Qibli notices the intense loyalty the NightWings have toward Darkstalker. He considers where this devotion comes from and recognizes the lack of power the NightWings have in Pyrrhia. This reminds readers of the goal of intertribal unity at the foundation of the Wings of Fire universe. The NightWings are loyal to Darkstalker for the power he represents within the broader context of Pyrrhia.

Chapters 21 through 24 continue to develop the issue of free will and magical compulsion, and Winter establishes a voice of moral authority on this issue. He demonstrates extreme aversion to attempts at mental coercion or compulsion. While Qibli’s feelings for Moon encourage him to carefully consider Moon’s opinions, Winter represents moral decisiveness. His certainty and moral self-righteousness are an important aspect of his role as a Qibli’s helper in the hero’s journey. And Winter’s concerns about the danger that Darkstalker’s mental compulsion represents is fully justified when Moon and Qibli discover Darkstalker is enchanting another dragon mimic Clearsight. This passage foreshadows Darkstalker’s coercion and control of Vulture at the climax of the novel.

Once again, Qibli’s earring is an important symbol within the motif of free will. Once Qibli sees Moon, he encourages her to wear a copy of his earring, an active symbol of her loyalty to Qibli. Later, when Darkstalker seeks out Moon, he recognizes the earring as a challenge to her loyalty and commitment to their friendship, further positioning free will as a nuance within the Loyalty, Family, and Friendship theme.

As Part 2 moves towards a conclusion, Qibli’s developing empathy plays an important narrative role. It foreshadows the resolution of the NightWing and IceWing war in Part 3 as well as the resolution of the conflict between Qibli and Darkstalker as the protagonist and shadow.

Leaving the NightWing kingdom with a well-developed sense of empathy, a series of self-discoveries, and a soulreader completes Qibli’s experience in the metaphorical abyss. Returning to Jade Mountain Academy to stop Darkstalker and the battle between the IceWings and NightWings constitute a rebirth that signals his final steps on the hero’s journey.
