Book Club Questions

Demon Copperhead

General Impressions

Gather initial thoughts and broad opinions about the book.

1.   Demon Copperhead touches on many dark and potentially distressing topics, including addiction, abuse, and sex trafficking. Did you find the ugliness of Demon’s world overwhelming? Or were there moments of hope that offset the darkness?

2.   Demon Copperhead critiques many aspects of American society. Which critiques did you find most effective, and why? Has the novel changed how you think about any contemporary societal issues?

3.   Was this your first experience reading a reworking of classic literature (in this case, Charles Dickens’s David Copperfield)? If not, how does Demon Copperhead compare to other adaptations you’ve encountered? If so, based on your experience with Demon Copperhead, would you consider reading other adaptations of classic literature? Why or why not?

Personal Reflection and Connection

Encourage connection between the book’s themes or characters and personal experiences.

1.   Which aspects of Demon’s struggles resonated most with you? Does relating to Demon’s story require personal experience of poverty, addiction, etc., or are the novel’s ideas about adversity and resilience more broadly relevant?

2.   Demon’s relationships are a key part of the novel, whether familial (e.g., Demon’s mother and Betsy Woodall), platonic (e.g., Fast Forward and Maggot), or romantic (e.g., Dori and Angus). Which of these relationships did you find most affecting? How do they compare to significant relationships in your own life?

3.   Demon’s discovery of his interest in writing comics/graphic novels is a turning point in his character arc. Has a passion for a particular subject or hobby ever helped you through a difficult time?

4.   How familiar were you with the societal issues the novel touches on (e.g., rural poverty)? Have you noticed similar issues impacting your own community?

Societal and Cultural Context

Examine the book’s relevance to societal issues, historical events, or cultural themes.

1.   Consider the book’s depiction of the failures of social services and the foster care system. Does Kingsolver’s portrayal of these institutions reflect any current societal debates? Or is part of her project to shed light on issues that receive comparatively little attention?

2.   The ongoing opioid crisis plays a major role in the novel. Based on what you know of this crisis, are Demon’s experiences with addiction “typical”? What about the experiences of secondary characters like Dori? How might Kingsolver be trying to intervene in the national dialogue about addiction?

Literary Analysis

Dive into the book’s structure, characters, themes, and symbolism.

1.   How do Demon’s childhood experiences impact him? What gives him the strength to keep going despite all that he has been through? Overall, what might Kingsolver be saying about the role of environment in shaping identity?

2.   Why might Kingsolver have chosen Appalachia as the work’s setting? What is it about this region of the United States that lends itself both to Kingsolver’s indictment of societal institutions and to her celebration of human resilience?

3.   The novel features a recurring motif of water (e.g., Demon’s birth in an amniotic sac, Devil’s Bathtub, etc.). What role does water play, literally or figuratively, in Demon’s life? Did you notice any other recurring images? What might their significance be?

4.   David Copperfield is widely regarded as Dickens’s most autobiographical novel, so it is not surprising that it employs a first-person narrator. Demon Copperhead retains this element even though Kingsolver lacks the same personal connection to the story. How would you describe Demon’s narrative voice? What effect did this have on your experience of the story?

Creative Engagement

Encourage imaginative and creative connections to the book.

1.   Given Demon’s interests, Demon Copperhead would naturally lend itself to a graphic novel adaptation. If you were working on such an adaptation, what moments or symbols would you particularly work to include, and how?

2.   Imagine designing a playlist to accompany the novel. What songs would you choose to reflect different episodes of Demon’s life? Are there songs that evoke particular characters or themes?

3.   What do you think happens to Demon after the novel ends? If you were to read a sequel, what elements of his life, including his artistic ambitions and personal growth, would you want to see further explored?
