Chapter 9 Summary: “May”

In May, Greg begins his plans to be named Class Clown. He decides that while his teacher Mr. Worth is absent for a dentist’s appointment, he will crack a bunch of jokes when the substitute teacher is around. After all, “[s]ubs are comic gold” because “[y]ou can say just about anything you want, and you can’t get in trouble” (201). However, Greg’s plan falls apart when he comes in the next day and finds that the substitute teacher is his mother. He complains that his mom “totally foiled [his] plan to win Class Clown” (203). Later, Greg is shocked to discover that the new school cartoonist is Rowley Jefferson, and the comic “Zoo-Wee Mama” is a hit around school.

Greg is furious that Rowley has become popular from the comic they came up with together, and one day after school Greg confronts Rowley and a crowd forms to watch them fight. Before either of them can throw any punches, “[a] bunch of teenagers [stop] their pickup truck” and head for Greg and Rowley. As the other students run off, Greg recognizes the teenagers as “the same guys who chased [Greg] and Rowley around on Halloween night” (208). The teenagers notice Greg staring at the Cheese on the blacktop, and they force Rowley to eat it. Greg manages to escape the same fate by lying and saying that he’s allergic to dairy. The teenagers leave, and Greg and Rowley walk home together in silence. The next day, the other students realize the Cheese is missing, and Greg knows “[i]f the truth ever came out about how the Cheese disappeared, Rowley would be finished” (214). Greg decides to tell everyone he decided to get rid of the Cheese. This means Greg must have the Cheese Touch, and everyone runs away from him.

Chapter 10 Summary: “June”

In the aftermath of the incident with the Cheese, Greg and Rowley become friends again and resume hanging out. Greg decides that having the Cheese Touch isn’t so bad because “[i]t got [him] out of doing the Square Dance unit in Phys Ed,” and “[he’s] had the whole lunch table to [him]self every day” (216). When yearbooks come out, Greg is annoyed to learn that Rowley was chosen as Class Clown because of his work on the “Zoo-Wee Mama” comic strip. Still, Greg writes that if Rowley ever starts to get an ego about his Class Clown status, Greg will just remind him of what happened to the Cheese.

Chapters 9-10 Analysis

As the school year draws to a close, Greg is horrified to discover that Rowley has become the school’s new cartoonist with “Zoo-Wee Mama.” However, what really angers Greg is the fact that people are actually laughing at Rowley’s cartoons. Even though Greg got bored with “Zoo-Wee Mama” and turned the whole project over to Rowley, he now demands recognition for the work he put into it because the comic strip is popular. This fight between Greg and Rowley demonstrates Greg’s lack of work ethic and how he wants to stand on his friend’s accomplishments without putting in any real work. Rowley, however, has had enough and won’t allow Greg to bully him anymore. Rowley has changed, and he has gained self-respect that outweighs his loyalty to Greg.

Although Greg undergoes very little change over the course of the novel, he has a rare moment of kindness and self-reflection after watching Rowley eat the Cheese. Greg realizes that if anyone finds out what Rowley did, Rowley’s social life will be over, and all his popularity will be gone in one fell swoop. Greg decides to take the blame for the disappearance of the Cheese, and in the process he becomes a social pariah with the infamous Cheese Touch. This goes against everything Greg was striving for, but at least he knows Rowley’s reputation has been saved from scrutiny. This event also mirrors the incident with the kindergarteners and the worms, where Rowley took the blame for something Greg did. This time, Greg takes the blame for something Rowley did, which demonstrates his development as a character. Still, as the novel concludes, Kinney hints that Greg hasn’t changed too much. After all, he still throws away his yearbook when he sees Rowley was named Class Clown, and he remarks that he won’t let the fame go to Rowley’s head. Greg is still deeply jealous of Rowley, but at least he did the right thing by protecting his friend.
