There is a thunderstorm. Ezra loves storms, but Felix hates them for their unpredictability. They stay at Ezra’s apartment and skip class. Felix texts Declan that he said yes to a situation and it led to a necessary confrontation. He also asks Declan about his ex-boyfriend. Declan knew his ex was going to end things, so he pushed him away instead, but his heart was still broken. Felix slips up, accidentally texting Ezra’s name. Felix is forced to admit that he goes to St. Cat’s and knows Ezra, which makes Declan trust Lucky less.
Felix admits that he’s never been in love but that he wants to be; he writes a long paragraph speculating about what love must feel like. When Declan asks what’s stopping him, Felix says he’s waiting for someone to love him back. As Felix falls asleep, Declan calls him. Felix is nervous that Declan will recognize his voice but picks up anyway. Declan wants to know why Lucky doesn’t believe anyone could love him. Again, Felix is scared to give himself away but says that it’s because of his many identities: “The love interests in books, or in movies or TV shows, are always white, cis, straight, blond hair, blue eyes… it becomes a little hard, I guess, to convince myself I deserve the kind of love you see on movie screens” (219). Declan says that he is falling in love with Lucky and really wants to meet in person. Felix says no, anxious that this will upset Ezra and that Declan won’t be interested in a trans person. Declan says he can’t stop texting Lucky, and Felix doesn’t want to stop either.
Felix’s father notices that his lights were on until five in the morning and asks if he was talking to somebody, saying that he used to stay up late talking to Felix’s mom. He asks Felix if he’s practicing safe sex, which triggers Felix’s gender dysphoria.
Felix goes to school early to paint. Declan tells Felix that his painting is good. Jill reminds the students that the end-of-summer gallery is coming up, but Felix cannot focus with both Marisol and Declan sitting so close. He tries not to stare at Declan while wondering if Declan will recognize his voice from the phone. Ezra is out sick, and grandequeen69 messages Felix saying that he has no friends without Ezra. Felix is not sure if Ezra is really sick or if he’s actually upset with Felix.
Leah asks Felix out to lunch and compliments his art. Hazel says that she doesn’t think Felix’s art is that good; when she says that it feels good to say the truth, Felix wonders if Hazel is the troll because the troll said something to the same effect.
Leah tells Felix that Marisol is going through a hard time with her father, but Felix does not forgive her. When Felix suggests that they stop looking through people’s phones to find the gallery wall troll, Leah says that they will not give up.
Felix approaches Declan at lunch and awkwardly thanks him for complimenting his painting earlier. That evening when Declan calls Lucky, Felix is sad that Declan doesn’t bring up their conversation at lunch. Declan asks Lucky for a secret, and Felix talks about his 476 drafted emails to his mom. In return, Declan reveals how his emotionally abusive dad disowned him when he came out as gay. Declan lives with his grandfather now and doesn’t have his parents to pay for his college tuition. Felix sobs upon hearing this, feeling grateful for his own father. He asks Declan why he broke up with Ezra, and Declan says he always thought Ezra was in love with Felix.
Ezra gets over his cold and wants to celebrate. Felix wonders if Ezra is in love with him and, if so, why he is dating Austin. Felix meets a very drunk Ezra at Stonewall; Ezra says he broke up with Austin. Felix figures out that Ezra was staying with his parents and assumes it means Ezra needed a break from him. Felix usually doesn’t like to dance, but he’s tired of watching and never participating, so he joins Ezra. When a slower song plays, Ezra rests his head against Felix, who thinks Declan is probably right. Felix is elated when Ezra asks him to come over. Ezra explains that he didn’t like Austin that much and that he felt hurt about Felix’s relationship with Declan but realized it was immature.
Ezra has finally decorated his apartment with real furniture. They talk about how much they’ve missed one another. Ezra recounts his break up, which ended with Austin throwing breadsticks at him. They laugh uncontrollably. Felix admits that he’s jealous because he hasn’t had his first kiss or love, which Ezra already knows, but the admission is imbued with new meaning given Declan’s claim. Ezra asks to kiss Felix and, when Felix consents, gives him tips on how to do it. Ezra gets a boner and rushes to the bathroom; Felix immediately fears the awkwardness of the situation and runs out to the stoop. Ezra follows him, admitting that he’s wanted to kiss Felix for a long time and that he can’t control his feelings. Felix is angry but thinks to himself, “underneath that anger is fear. Ezra and I—we’d make so much sense” (258). Felix is paralyzed by fear of their relationship ending, of Ezra realizing he doesn’t love Felix anymore and then leaving, just like Felix’s mother left. Felix says he doesn’t want Ezra’s love. Ezra regrets telling Felix how he feels.
Felix struggles to separate his Lucky persona from himself, as evidenced by his accidental admission that he goes to St. Cat’s and his disappointment when Declan does not tell Lucky about his interaction with Felix. Although Lucky and Declan are building intimacy, Felix’s slip-ups make it clear that their virtual relationship is not sustainable or fulfilling. Anonymity has enabled them to share secrets and insecurities, but a truly honest and open relationship is impossible with Felix’s identity still concealed. Though Felix has found new courage and maturity, he is still constrained by fear of loss: He withholds his identity from Declan out of worry that Declan will not like him for who he actually is, just as he rejects Ezra’s confession out of fear that he may one day lose Ezra entirely. Felix avoids his fear of loss and heartbreak by adamantly rejecting the possibility of a relationship between him and Ezra after they share a kiss. Although Felix was extremely excited to go home with Ezra and kiss him, once the idea of a romantic relationship shifts from potential to reality, Felix shuts down emotionally, showing his inability to accept love for fear that he’ll lose it. In this moment, the potential hurt of knowing love and then losing it supersedes the pain of never knowing love at all.
Trust, and the lack thereof, is another major theme in this section. As Declan looks around the school wondering who Lucky could be, Felix looks around the school trying to figure out who grandequeen69 could be. The ongoing trolling leads Felix to trust almost no one; he analyzes everything his classmates do and say, searching for evidence that they’re his troll.
Despite these unresolved conflicts, Felix continues to make strides toward self-acceptance. Felix’s personal growth and artistic growth are symbiotic: As he becomes braver and builds his self-worth, his art improves. As his art improves, he gains more self-worth. Each new portrait helps him see himself in a more positive and authentic light. Heading back to the studio after the confrontation at Coney Island, he wonders, “I want to see what a new self-portrait would look like, after I’ve stood up for myself. Would my skin be as purple as the lightening outside, my eyes as dark as the gray sand and sea?” (213). As Felix takes more risks in life and with his art, he feels more excited to paint—gone is the dread he felt before.
In the aftermath of Felix exposing Marisol’s transphobic comments, forgiveness becomes a recurring subject. Leah tells Felix about a hardship that Marisol is going through, but Felix decides that her hardship does not excuse her actions and chooses not to forgive her. This theme foreshadows the events to come, as Declan gets closer to figuring out who Lucky is, Felix grapples with Ezra’s love, and Felix continues searching for his troll.
