Mrs. Ainsley, the art teacher, stops Calli in the hall to remind her that she still needs to finish her self-portrait. Calli has started and erased her portrait several times, opting to work on other projects instead. Mrs. Ainsley tells Calli to work on the self-portrait from now on.

Part 2, Chapter 105 Summary: “Valentine”

It is the week before Valentine’s Day and Calli wants to ask Jinsong to be her valentine. Her new tic kept her from asking in English class, but Calli sees Jinsong at lunch and decides “it’s now or never” (138).

Part 2, Chapter 106 Summary: “Salad and Sugar Cookies”

Jinsong is getting his lunch when he sees Calli walking toward him. He thinks that she looks pretty, but he’s also scared that other people will notice her talking to him. Calli asks him to be her valentine, but Jinsong lies and says that he already has a valentine. Jinsong doesn’t want his classmates to think he’s “a loser” by being associated with Calli (139). Duncan makes fun of Calli again and Jinsong says nothing while Calli walks away. Jinsong feels bad, so he bribes Kenny with a sugar cookie to ask Calli to be his valentine instead.

Part 2, Chapter 113 Summary: “Caring”

After dinner, Jinsong confronts Beatriz about the way she’s been treating Calli. Beatriz shrugs off his accusation but mocks him for liking Calli. Jinsong tries to hide that he likes Calli, instead claiming that he’s “the student body president. So [he’s] supposed to be friends with everyone” (174). Beatriz points out that he hasn’t been a good friend to her this year, but Jinsong says that Beatriz hasn’t been fun to be around since her mom left.

Part 2 Analysis

The rising action in Part 2 focuses on the growing tension between Calli and Jinsong, ending with a fight between the two over Jinsong’s lack of courage. During this tension, Jinsong’s character remains static while Terry emphasizes Calli’s character development. Jinsong does not confront Beatriz or the others about the bullying, but Calli demonstrates courage when she asks Jinsong to be her valentine. To emphasize Jinsong’s lack of courage, Terry establishes Kenny as a foil to Jinsong: He barely knows Calli, but he’s willing to help her regardless of how other people will talk, while Jinsong, who knows Calli well at this point, still can’t get over his fear. As a result, Kenny is the first student whom Calli tells about her Tourette syndrome, not Jinsong. Jinsong leaves poppies at Calli’s door but doesn’t apologize or ask how she’s doing. Even in his attempt to fix their friendship, his passivity gets in the way. This sequence demonstrates how genuine Conflict Resolution in Friendships leads to strong relationships.

Part 2 demonstrates a significant shift in relation to Neurodiversity and Self-Acceptance. Though Calli and Jinsong’s relationship deteriorates in this part, Calli does share her Tourette syndrome diagnosis with one classmate and teacher, leading to an important mentor conversation with the school psychologist, Mrs. Baumgartner. Terry uses Mrs. Baumgartner as a catalyst for Calli’s character development. At first, Calli doesn’t trust Mrs. Baumgartner; Mrs. Baumgartner says her name wrong, and wants Calli to talk about “‘life’ and ‘feelings’” (156). There is a contradiction here in Calli’s response. Calli wants to have close friendships and for adults to understand her better, but she also doesn’t want to express herself or share her thoughts out of fear of judgment. Calli’s relationship with Mrs. Baumgartner shifts when she admits to suppressing her tics and Mrs. Baumgartner, calling Calli by her correct name, tells her to “let them out!” (161). This is a turning point for Calli’s development and creates a moment of narrative catharsis. Significantly, it is Calli’s mom who encourages her to share with Mrs. Baumgartner, which denotes her character development, too, given that Calli’s mom has always told her not to talk about her Tourette syndrome. From this moment forward, Calli begins to share more about her feelings, and her Tourette’s, with those around her.

Despite this development in Calli’s mom’s character, Terry continues to explore Hurt in Child-Parent Relationships through the subplot of her relationships. Though Calli’s mom knows about Calli’s incident at school, when Calli arrives home, her mom has gone to Tom’s house. Calli’s key takeaway from her mom’s note is her mom’s phrase: “It might be a late night” (167). This is the phrase her mom used right before her most recent break-up, and the word “might” encompasses the uncertainty and lack of control in Calli’s life. However, when she realizes that her mom and Tom seem happy together, Calli secretly wishes that things were going poorly so that they’d have the excuse to leave town. Though Calli’s internal goal is to stay in one place so that she can make a friend, the difficulties that she’s facing are overwhelming to her, and she wants to return to her status quo: running. At the end of Part 2, Terry builds Calli’s conflicts with Jinsong, her bullies, and her mom to a breaking point, anticipating the novel’s climax at the carnival in Part 3.
