Part 3 Analysis

In Part 3, Calli and Jinsong repair their friendship, overcome their bullies, and achieve the personal development goals that they’ve each pursued from the start of the novel. Terry argues, through Jinsong’s apology at the carnival, that true friendships are built on honesty and trust and that these qualities are paramount to Conflict Resolution in Friendships. As long as Calli and Jinsong didn’t address their issues, their friendship remained strained, but once they were honest with one another, they were able to move forward. Their friendship resolution mirrors Calli’s repaired relationship with her Tourette syndrome. While Calli suppressed her tics, her experience with Tourette’s only grew worse, but once Calli started sharing about her struggle and explaining Tourette’s to more people, the more confident she felt about being herself. The final chapter of the novel illustrates this point, as Calli tells her new homeroom class in Las Vegas about her Tourette’s on the first day—a direct contrast to the start of the story.

Calli and her mom’s relationship evolves by the end of the novel. When her mom takes Calli to Las Vegas, Terry first emphasizes the Hurt in Child-Parent Relationships when Calli compares her itinerant life to that of a plant. Plants grow yet are rooted in one spot; Terry hence suggests that Calli’s life has caused her to view rootedness as unstable and see plants as wandering rather than static. This reflects Calli’s choice to uproot Mrs. Sumner’s poppies in the “Pocketful of Poppies” poem, an action that represents her own sense of instability. However, Calli confronts her mom about the moves, the men, the wedding, and the shame that her mom has about Calli’s Tourette’s. Ultimately, Calli considers that her mom’s inability to stay in one place, or stay single, must be like Calli’s Tourette’s: something that she can’t necessarily control. Terry suggests that Calli and her mom are repairing their relationship when Calli’s mom chooses to stay with her on the morning of her first day instead of simply dropping her off like she’s done before; this is also a direct contrast to the start of the story. Calli’s mom also agrees to drive Calli to visit Jinsong in the summer, which is the first time that Calli’s mom will willingly return to a place she’s previously lived. Calli’s mom shows some growth, but Terry does not resolve her development, leaving the novel with a hopeful yet sober sense that there is a journey ahead for both Calli and her mom.

The final lines of the poem use the moon symbol to show how Calli’s outlook on moving and friendship has shifted. On Calli and Jinsong’s last day together, they talk about how the moon is constantly moving away. This is their way of expressing their sadness about Calli’s move and how permanent it feels. However, on the final page, Calli writes that the moon “always looks the same” from Earth (326). Instead of focusing on how the moon moves, Calli highlights how the moon can be steady and unchangeable, like her and Jinsong’s friendship.
