Chapter 5 Summary: “Invitations”

Edward stays in Forks, determined to avoid both outcomes that Alice predicted. He ignores Bella and resists his developing feelings for her. Both his thirst and his curiosity about Bella torment Edward and he finds himself increasingly drawn to Bella’s kindness and purity. He thinks, “Bella was good. All the other things added up to that whole: Kind and self-effacing and unselfish and brave—she was good through and through” (92). As Edward spies on Bella through the thoughts of others, his distaste for Mike Newton grows. Alice is anxious to begin her friendship with Bella and is annoyed that Edward’s avoidance of Bella muddles her future again. Edward’s resistance is finally broken when he overhears Mike ask Bella to a school dance, and Edward speaks to her. He apologizes for being so rude, only to find out that Bella believes he regrets saving her.

After school, Edward overhears more boys in the parking lot asking Bella to the dance, which now amuses Edward. On seeing Edward’s change in mood towards Bella, Alice wants to know if she can finally talk to her, although Edward sees no point. Edward begins to worry about Bella’s safety again, especially given her previous two near-death experiences. Edward goes to Bella’s house that night to ease his anxiety and he watches her sleep. He initially feels disgusted at himself, thinking, “I was repulsed by myself as I watched her toss again. How was I any better than some sick peeping tom? I wasn’t any better. I was much, much worse” (106). Still, he cannot resist watching her. Looking at Bella, Edward realizes he thinks she is pretty. She then surprises him by saying his name in her sleep. This provokes a sudden and permanent change in Edward, who now genuinely loves Bella. The next day at school, Edward tries to get back on Bella’s good side, since he has been extremely rude to her lately. He offers to go to Seattle with Bella and tells her that he cannot stay away from her any longer.

Chapter 6 Summary: “Blood Type”

Edward spies on Bella during the day and is surprised to see that she is a clumsy person. At lunch, Edward sits by himself and waits for Bella, which angers Rosalie and confuses Emmett and Jasper. Alice still wants to speak with Bella, but Edward tells her to wait. When Bella arrives, Edward beckons her over. He tells Bella that while he is “going to hell,” he might as well just embrace talking to her (119). Edward is tired of trying to be good by avoiding Bella, which confuses her. They decide to be friends, and Bella explains that she has been trying to figure out what Edward is. Edwards wants to hear a theory, although Bella is embarrassed to admit that one involves a radioactive spider. In response, Edward admits that he might be the “bad guy” (124), but Bella insists that he cannot be bad. At the end of lunch, Edward skips class while Bella heads to biology.

Waiting in his car again, Edward overhears Mike’s frantic thoughts about Bella, who is passed out on the sidewalk. Mike’s thoughts tell Edward that Bella fainted from blood typing in biology, which Edward specifically avoided by skipping class. To Mike’s annoyance, Edward helps take Bella to the nurse. Edward convinces the school secretary to excuse Bella for the rest of the day, and Bella invites Edward to an upcoming group beach trip. When she says that the trip is to La Push, Edward is disappointed because he cannot go. Edward insists on driving Bella home himself, but this annoys Bella. Edward is confused about how to stop annoying Bella—he does not understand how to court someone in the modern era, let alone the one person whose mind he cannot read. They speak about Bella’s family, and they both note that Bella is older than her years. Edward drops Bella at home and they say goodbye. Edward also asks Bella to not let herself get hurt over the weekend.

Chapter 7 Summary: “Melody”

While waiting to pick his siblings up from school, Edward mulls over whether Bella is actually attracted to him. He is desperate to be a normal human so he can love Bella without hurting her, although he has little experience with love. After he takes his family home, Edward plays the piano. This pleases Esme, his adopted mother, since she has not heard Edward play in a while. Edward composes a new song while he thinks about Rosalie’s jealousy towards Bella. Alice interrupts Edward’s thoughts to announce that Jasper’s vampire friends Peter and Charlotte plan to visit the next weekend. Edward immediately worries for Bella’s safety. Edward decides to go hunting early with Emmett so he can be back in time to protect Bella from any danger, even if unlikely.

On their hunting trip, Emmett teases Edward about Bella, and Edward teases Emmett about Rosalie. They seriously discuss Edward’s love for Bella and desire to keep her human. On Monday morning, Edward sneaks back to Bella’s bedroom to watch her sleep, imaging her on her beach trip. He thinks about the Quileutes, the Indigenous tribe with whom the Cullens have a treaty. Despite his concern for Bella’s safety while other vampires are in town, Edward is glad for an excuse to stay near her.

Chapter 8 Summary: “Ghost”

Since the next few days are too sunny for the Cullens to attend school, where they would be obviously inhuman, Edward again spies on Bella through others’ thoughts. Mike asks out Bella again and this annoys Edward. Bella rejects Mike, explaining that he would hurt Jessica’s feelings. After school, Edward watches Bella nap in her backyard. Charlie arrives home, and Edward overhears Bella’s plan to visit Port Angeles with Jessica and another girl named Angela. Edward decides he will follow Bella there for her own protection. That night, Edward watches Bella sleep fitfully. Before following Bella to Port Angeles, Edward returns briefly home, where the others think about how crazily he is acting. He heads out to find Bella.

Chapters 5-8 Analysis

By Chapter 5, Edward is well on track to falling in love with Bella. He watches her at night for the first time, attempting to explain away what he knows to be a violation of Bella’s privacy—he compares himself to a “peeping tom” (106). Edward struggles internally between his growing desire to be with Bella and his self-hatred. To Edward, being a vampire means that he represents a danger to humans, and yet he cannot resist the self-indulgence of loving and being near Bella. He expresses part of this struggle to Bella in Chapter 6 when he admits that while he is “going to hell,” he might as well go all the way and just talk to her (119). When Bella begins to guess what Edward is and her theory is closer to a superhero, Edward asks what she thinks if he were the “bad guy” (124). By saying that he is a bad guy and that he is damned to an eternity in hell, Edward shows that he believes his nature to be unchangeably evil. Edward’s love for Bella, however, prompts him to embrace part of his identity and abilities as a vampire when he becomes obsessively protective over her in Chapter 7. Bella, who does not yet know about Edward’s nighttime visits, does not hate Edward like he hates himself—she believes him to be good. This also reflects the juxtaposition Edward sets up in his mind between himself, the evil monster, and Bella, the innocent and good human.

Although Edward despises his own nature as a vampire, he continues to look to his vampire family for models of romantic love. He thinks often of the other pairings in his family—Carlisle and Esme, Rosalie and Emmett, and Alice and Jasper—because he has no experience with this type of love himself. In fact, for the otherwise static and unchanging vampires in Meyer’s world, love is a singular force that permanently changes the one it captures. Meyer captures this change precisely in Edward. When he watches Bella sleep for the first time in Chapter 5 and Bella says Edward’s name, this provokes a permanent change. Although Edward previously tried to resist his love for Bella, it is now an inescapable part of his life. The full quote is “I decided as long as I was going to hell, I might as well do it thoroughly.” So I left the comma inside the quotation marks instead of outside.
