Chapter 42 Summary: “Stevie”

After seeing the negative comments online, Stevie feels sorry for Zanders. She doesn’t like what people are saying about her either, and she worries that she might lose her job. When she discusses the issue with Ryan, he suggests that she get “out of the airline industry” (360) and look for a new job. Stevie admits she has been considering this possibility.

Zanders knocks on the door, interrupting the conversation, and Ryan sees himself out. Stevie immediately notices that Zanders is upset. They start talking about the paparazzi issue, and Zanders says he thinks it would be better if they break up. He doesn’t want to hurt Stevie anymore and cannot jeopardize his career. Stevie protests, but Zanders insists that he is always going to be the same person. Crying, Stevie accuses Zanders of making her fall in love with him. He doesn’t respond and lets himself out.

Chapter 43 Summary: “Stevie”

Stevie is so upset over the breakup that she has trouble focusing at work. On the flight to Seattle, she refuses to engage Zanders in any form of conversation that doesn’t relate to work.

Stevie’s dad surprises her and appears at her Seattle hotel. She opens up about her relationship and breakup with Zanders. Her dad realizes that she is in love with him. Then the conversation turns to her parents’ marriage. Her dad reveals that he and her mom have been having trouble, but he also states that her mom has begun to realize how badly she has treated Stevie. The conversation then shifts to Stevie’s job. Stevie doesn’t want to leave Chicago, but she tells her dad that she plans to apply for a new job in Seattle the next day.

After the next game, Zanders unwraps the medical tape he’s been wearing over Stevie’s ring while playing. He didn’t like how Stevie looked at him on the plane, but he swears that he’ll never take the ring off.

Zanders can’t sleep that night. He goes over everything that has happened and blames himself for hurting Stevie. Maddison comes over to check on him and reveals that he fired Rich as his agent. He thinks that Rich has been “tipping off the press” (381) and using them for his own financial benefit. Zanders agrees but fears that firing Rich will ruin his career. Then they discuss Zanders’s future. Maddison assures Zanders that he’ll still be a part of his family even if he stops playing for Chicago. Zanders breaks down and confesses how upset he is about Stevie, revealing that he broke up with her before she could break up with him. Maddison reassures Zanders he’s deserving of love and urges him to win Stevie back.

She isn’t sure how to tell him that she quit her job, took a new job, and is returning to Seattle to find an apartment in the coming weeks.

Back in Chicago, Stevie spends time at the shelter and tells Cheryl about Seattle. Cheryl asks Stevie if she really wants to go. Then Ryan shows up and reveals that the paper released Stevie’s name in association with Zanders; there are now paparazzi outside their building. He offers to block the photographers’ view of her. From his window, Zanders witnesses Stevie’s confrontation with his mom and mentally prepares to interact with his mother himself. The narrative reveals that he contacted her and invited her to Chicago. When she comes in, he tells her how he feels about their past. He confronts her for abandoning him and declares that he doesn’t want her in his life anymore. She tries to push back, but he insists that she has already hurt their family enough.

Zanders races to the airport, making it onto the plane just in time. He can’t wait to see Stevie and clear everything up. However, he is surprised to see that a new flight attendant has replaced her. He confronts Indy, who explains that Stevie is starting a new job in Seattle.

Four months later, Zanders and Stevie are living together in Zanders’s Chicago penthouse. Zanders is also repairing his relationship with his dad.

Chapter 42-Epilogue Analysis

In the final section of the novel, the author employs the commonly used trope of the “third act breakup” to force the protagonists to find a way to overcome their remaining conflicts. The events of Chapter 42 therefore act as the narrative climax and mark a turning point in both protagonists’ development. Before Zanders initiates the breakup under the misguided belief that he is protecting Stevie from further harm, Stevie believes that she and Zanders will continue to work together to combat the recent media scandal. Her private thoughts about the situation reveal her belief that she and Zanders have a chance at making a life together, and his choice to withdraw from the relationship therefore represents a deep betrayal on a very personal level, regardless of his reasons. Her equilibrium crumbles when Zanders ends their relationship due to the media pressure, and in the wake of this misguided decision, the narrative focuses more intensely upon each character’s internal growth and revelations as they each try to reorient to a life without one another.

While the well-worn plot dynamics of the romance genre dictate that Stevie and Zanders’s breakup is merely temporary, their time apart does help them to reconcile The Tension Between Public and Private Personas, and they also work to overcome their past traumas and improve their present lives. While Stevie pursues a potential new life in Seattle, Zanders seeks answers to his own vocational complications, and significantly, both characters must rely on the help of their friends and family to overcome these issues. For Stevie, her decision to talk to her dad and brother and to open up to Cheryl and Indy gives her much-needed clarity about her future. Likewise, Zanders’s conversations with Maddison and his dad help him to understand the sacrifices he must make for The Transformative Power of Love. Up until this point, Zanders has been afraid “to show his true colors because the reputation he’s earned in the NHL is quite the opposite of what a good man he is” (372). However, the love of his friends and family helps him to embrace his authentic self and create a better life. Because both protagonists gain the space to grow as individuals, they are better able to reunite at the novel’s end and create a more healthy, balanced dynamic.

The characters’ actions throughout these final chapters exemplify their growth and reiterate The Transformative Power of Love. Zanders’s decisions to cut his mom out of his life, apologize to his dad, fire Rich, and open up to Ryan are all signs of his inner transformation, and it is clear that he is taking steps to care for himself and allow himself to become more vulnerable with others in order to heal from his family trauma. Meanwhile, Stevie’s determination to confront the paparazzi, stand up to Zanders’s mom, pursue an independent life for herself, and repair her relationship with her own mother indicate that she has undergone considerable internal transformation as well. By the end of the novel, Zanders and Stevie realize that they have become integral to one another’s lives by encouraging each other to take risks and to love themselves. For these reasons, they are able to start life anew and face the world as an authentic couple.
