Chapters 21-24

Chapter 21 Summary

Before bed that night Daniel stands in front of the mirror and reflects on the nature of his condition. He wonders whether knowing about his OCD and naming it allows him to make it any better. He also wonders about the nature of mental illnesses, asking himself “if it was just something that was broken” or if it was “there for a reason” (228). Despite these reflections he gets zapped anyway and brushes his teeth until his gums bleed.

At school the next day, where he is now getting called “Dan the Man” (228) in a positive way, he has a conversation with Raya. She says that her dad will allow him round to her house to “hang out” even after he caught them kissing. She touches him on the arm.

At football practice the original kicker, Kevin, who has now recovered, confronts Daniel. Kevin accuses Daniel of stealing his spot and refuses to see as sincere Daniel’s offer to give it back.

Chapter 22 Summary

Meeting Sara after practice, she talks more about her dad and how he used to argue with her mom about how much she worked and went out. She also reveals that he drank. Sara shows Daniel pictures of her and her dad together, saying when asked whether she talked to him, “That he was the only one in the world. Until you” (238). At dinner Daniel gets quizzed more about Sara by his family. Steve calls her “psycho Sara” and Danie gets defensive about her then goes to his room. He realizes, after defending Sara that he likes Sara and not Raya. This is despite the fact Raya is “cool” and “normal.” Daniel writes more of his story before bed. He writes about how fictional Sara saves him from one of the “portal men” as they are getting fuel at a gas station. She kills the creature with an electrified croquet mallet.

It is the final game of the state play-offs. It starts poorly for Daniel, with him missing a few kicks. It seems as if Daniel would be spared having to make a decisive kick when, towards the end of the game, with the score tied, Max is put through to the opposition goal. He inexplicably drops a pass though. This means Daniel will have to make a kick that decides the match. He is incredibly anxious as he approaches the kick, but then sees a sign from Sara that says, “FOOTBALL SUCKS” (249). This makes Daniel laugh, relaxes him, and he does a perfect kick. His team win the game, and he is caught up in the celebrations, winning a trophy, with his dad telling him that he is proud.

Chapter 23 Summary

They celebrate the victory at the coach’s house, and Daniel enjoys the fact that he has had almost an entire day without any zaps. When he gets home though he has five missed calls from Sara’s mobile. Daniel rings up the number, and Sara’s mother answers. It turns out that Sara had fought with her mom after the game, then went missing. John was supposed to have given her a lift to the library, but the staff at the library had not seen her.

Daniel searches in the car for Sara with his mom. They then phone the police, who question Daniel. He tells them something about what he and Sara had been doing, and their suspicions about John. They don’t believe him, however. Daniel reflects on his time with Sara, then decides to head out of the door himself. He finds Sara in the field they had been to previously, lying in the grass. She tells him that she thought John had “basically admitted” (258) to the murder to her that night. Daniel holds her hand as they lie in the grass.

Chapter 24 Summary

Before meeting up with Sara again, she had sent him an email the following morning saying she had a plan, Daniel works more on his book, which he now classifies as “a short novel” (264). Fictional Daniel and Sara, in the story, reach the apartment of Charles Oliver in New York. They are almost attacked by one of the portal men, but manage to escape it, and get into Charles Oliver’s flat.

Sara and Daniel meet by the corner of John’s street. Sara has taken her mother’s phone, who is away with her grandma. The plan is two-fold. First it is to track John via Sara’s phone that is hidden in the back of John’s car. Secondly, Sara will pretend to be her mother to John using her mom’s phone. She messages John saying that, “Sara is asking me questions. I think she knows” (265). John reveals in these messages that there is a letter that it is important to hide. So, Sara and Daniel go into John’s house to try and find it. They discover the letter on the bed, which he was obviously in the process of moving. It is from Michelle, Sara’s mom, to John, asking for “help” regarding Sara’s dad. The letter also says she requires help in writing another letter to Sara, pretending to be from her dad. Daniel interprets this as clear proof of murder. As they are about to leave though, John enters the room, holding a gun.

Chapters 21-24 Analysis

After Daniel defends Sara from Steve calling her “Psycho Sara” (242), he goes to his room and wonders:

Did I like Sara Malvern? It didn’t even make any sense. I liked Raya. Cool, normal, popular Raya Singh, who reminded me of what I wanted to be—normal too. Sara was the world I wanted to get away from. The crazy one where our minds didn’t work right […] (242).

Daniel is confronted by the choice between Raya, whom he had a crush on at the beginning of the novel, and Sara, who he has suddenly realized he has feelings for. Daniel must choose between two different “worlds”: He can choose Raya and attempt to fit in, or he can choose Sara and embrace his difference.

Raya is slightly alternative in her style and in her interest in Daniel, but she is passive. She uses her appearance, her hair, and her clothes to elicit attention, and then waits for Daniel to take the initiative. In contrast, despite her quietness around others, Sara adopts the active role with Daniel. She initiates contact by greeting him and leaving the note in his bag. She makes plans and asks Daniel to do things. Sara’s personality inspires David to create the fictional Sara in his book, who saves Daniel from one of the portal men, not vice-versa, killing the creature with her electric croquet mallet. She is the hero in that story, just as she is the hero in her own real-life adventure. It is Sara, more so than Daniel, who shows the real bravery and resourcefulness in investigating her father’s disappearance. Furthermore, her courage and initiative are used to help Daniel in real life. In holding up the “FOOTBALL SUCKS” (249) sign, she indicates both an understanding of Daniel’s potential anxiety during the match, and an imaginative compassion for his plight there. Likewise, when Sara gives Daniel the book on OCD, she seeks to understand and support him. She is the only one who has any awareness of Daniel’s condition, premised on her own awareness that being unique is a struggle.

Daniel has a deeper connection with Sara. As he says, “I wanted to just like Raya Singh and leave it there. But as I stared up at the stucco ceiling, it wasn’t Raya’s face I saw there” (242). Daniel wishes for the simple and easy route of being with Raya, but his real affection is for Sara. They both understand what it is like to live with a mental illness, which unites them. As Sara says to Daniel, “[Y]ou must be very special to make me talk” (229). It is what makes him distinct and different that allows her to open up to him. Conversely, Sara’s very isolation makes her the one person with whom Daniel can communicate about his own pain and isolation. Thus, his self-understanding, and development as a person, is inextricably linked to hers.
