As July gives way to August, the hotel is so busy that Lizbet is taking bookings for next summer. Lizbet is missing Mario and is obsessed with Yolanda’s visits to the hotel kitchen. Then, a woman called Claire Underwood comes to the hotel. Lizbet suspects she is really Shelly Carpenter because she shares a name with a character from a TV show, House of Cards. Lizbet is eager to fulfill all of “Shelly’s” demands, including giving her the owner’s suite that was originally reserved for Xavier. A day later, “Shelly” claims that her Gucci belt is missing. Chad panics, fearing that Bibi, who is infatuated with pretty things, took it. Chad finds a belt like the missing one in his mother’s closet and steals it for the hotel.
Then, Edie shows Lizbet a memo from Abigail Rashishe from the Cornell School of Hotel Administration, warning of a woman who poses as Shelly Carpenter, gives fake celebrity names, and pretends that she has lost expensive designer items to get compensation from the hotels. Chad feels bad when he hears this, and when he confesses the story of how he stole his mother’s belt to Bibi, she laughs and calls him the real thief.
Lizbet and Heidi go for dinner. Heidi confides the rumors about Michael and Lyric’s affair and Michael’s conspiracy theory to explain it. Lizbet thinks that Michael was the man Alessandra met on the ferry and that Alessandra found out about the spare key to the Laytons’ house and planted Lyric’s accessories where Heidi would find them. While Lizbet has no concrete proof Alessandra is the culprit, she will start watching her more closely.
While Edie is sending out resumes to hotels around the country for fall work, Graydon gets in touch asking for $1,000 and threatens to show the intimate videos of Edie to future employers. She realizes that he has guessed her password and is using it to hack into her emails. Edie recalls that Graydon, one of the most smooth and popular boys at Cornell, only became interested in her after she had “acquired the questionable mystique and celebrity of someone who had undergone a tragic loss” following her father’s death (272). Edie fell in love with Graydon and imagined a host of future plans with him. However, when Edie was made the student director of the Statler Hotel, Graydon became envious and resentful. This is when he began to demand that they film everything the two of them did in bed, even setting up scenarios that Edie was uncomfortable with.
Alessandra sees that Edie is upset, and Edie finally confesses her predicament. Alessandra informs Edie that revenge porn is a crime that could get Graydon arrested. Alessandra calls Graydon, masquerading as a fierce representative from the Pima County’s Sheriff’s department. Alessandra demands that Graydon return the money he has blackmailed out of Edie or face prosecution. Quaking, Graydon complies with Alessandra’s demands. Edie is grateful, and she and Alessandra grow closer.
Richie and Kimber are becoming a true couple and confess their mutual love for each other. Kimber, however, wants her children to know where Richie lives. He confesses that his divorce wiped him clean and that he is living in his car to save money. He did not tell Kimber previously because he worried that she would think he was dating her to stay in the suite.
JJ invites Lizbet out for dinner at their old usual spot at the Proprietors of India Street. When they are there, JJ apologizes again and asks for Lizbet back, both in a relationship and to manage the failing Deck. She finds that she misses him and remembers how happy she was when she was briefly pregnant. When she miscarried a child she was not even sure she wanted, she responded by refusing to have sex with JJ and pushing him away. She is almost ready to get back with JJ when she spots Yolanda and Beatriz and realizes they are a couple. Beatriz, who works in The Hotel Nantucket’s kitchen, is Yolanda’s lover, not Mario. Lizbet leaves immediately and runs to Mario’s cottage. He welcomes her.
Lizbet and Mario are a confirmed couple as they attend Nantucket’s Summer Groove, the final charity event of the summer. Xavier Darling is due to turn up for his visit, and Lizbet nervously prepares her staff.
All the staff are nervous about Xavier’s impending arrival; however, Lizbet is proud of how much they have grown since the beginning of the summer. She is conscious that Magda still seems to have kept her secret.
Kimber asks Richie to move to New York with her and her family when they leave and become a permanent fixture in her life.
Chad is introduced to a new cleaning partner, Doris, and worries that Bibi has been fired. He regrets not getting her number but refrained from doing so in case it garnered suspicion. He finds Magda at the end of the day, looking like “some hot older woman,” and is set to go for a drink with her (304).
Alessandra, who has stopped making conquests since the incident with Bone Williams, thinks that Xavier might be the man to set her up for a life of luxury. She embraces the opportunity to visit Xavier in his room with The Blue Guide, thinking that this is all it will take to seduce him. She is rebuffed; he makes no move to flirt with her and calls her by the wrong name. Alessandra feels desperate and wants a rich man to make her life easier. She whips out her phone to initiate some blackmail and sends pictures of herself in Bick’s house to him with the message: “I need fifty thousand more […] Otherwise, these go to your wife” (314). She then decides that she needs an ego boost and tries to give her number to Bob Ianucci, a hotel guest. However, he jokes that she is soliciting him, and Alessandra tries to pass it off as a joke. Alessandra tells Edie she feels sick, and Edie agrees to cover for her.
Over drinks, Chad tells Magda the truth about May 22, the day that still haunts him. He had a wild party in his parents’ house and recklessly popped a champagne cork, causing the accident that took Paddy’s eyesight. Moreover, someone started a fire in his parents’ house, causing their elderly beloved dog, Lulu, to die. His sister, Leith, has not spoken to him since. After, his parents were mainly concerned with covering up their reputation and no scandal leaking out. Chad is due to start working at his father’s business in the fall, but he prefers working at the hotel. Magda says that Chad’s summer at the hotel proves that he has character. Chad is thrilled to learn that Bibi is going to college on a scholarship to study criminal justice.
Lizbet and Mario are happier than ever and declare their mutual love.
Grace spies on Xavier and Magda making love in his suite. After, Xavier proposes with a Harry Winston ring, but Magda rejects him, saying that she does not love him and that she wants to stay on Nantucket. Richie, meanwhile, is taking suspicious phone calls from Lizbet’s office.
Lizbet is disconcerted to find that Xavier has already left. Meanwhile, Edie checks out the Marsh family, who are thrilled with their stay. Wanda cries, thinking Grace will be lonely without her. Lizbet tells Edie that she wants her to be the front desk manager next summer. Meanwhile, Mr. Ianucci makes so many demands that Edie suspects him of being Shelly Carpenter.
Heidi Bick turns up at reception and demands to know where Alessandra is. She shows Edie the photos that Alessandra was using to blackmail her and tells her about the attempt to frame Lyric. When Heidi leaves, Edie finds an envelope filled with all of Alessandra’s $1,000 bonuses and a note from Alessandra stating that they are rightfully Edie’s.
Edie goes to Alessandra’s and finds her on the verge of escaping the island. Edie persuades her to stay, and Alessandra confesses the scale of her summer sexual conquests, both with Michael and the hotel guests. They decide to split the bonuses, taking $2,000 each.
As the summer winds down, the challenge of earning the five-key accreditation looms again, and Lizbet desperately wonders who Shelly Carpenter might be, even mistaking an especially demanding guest for her. Xavier’s visit at the end of the season is another hoop they must jump through, conscious that this summer was a pilot and that he has the power to pull the plug on the whole project. When he leaves the day after spending a single night in his suite, Hilderbrand introduces a sense of foreboding regarding the hotel’s survival. However, it becomes abundantly evident that Magda was the woman he wanted to impress with the hotel, and he bought it as part of an elaborate courtship to transfigure her from employee to wife. Magda, however, values her independence and makes a stake on the island, where she wants to establish a more permanent life on her own terms. Here, Magda is a foil for Alessandra, seeking fulfillment through independence rather than relying on a rich partner. With this, she also subverts gender expectations and the gendered power hierarchy.
Magda also plays an important role in revealing the story that Chad has been too ashamed to tell all summer, alleviating the suspense that Hilderbrand has built regarding his circumstances. He realizes that all the cleaning in the world will not help him move on from his guilt if he does not share his story, and so he begins Redressing Past Hauntings as he tells Magda what happened on May 22. In telling the story of his wild graduation party and popping a champagne cork while high, half-blinding his best friend, Chad can measure how far he has grown from the careless, entitled kid who was brought up to believe that money can fix everything. By learning the hard way that it cannot and associating with different types of people, Chad is able to separate his perspective from his family’s and come into his own as a person.
Hilderbrand subverts genre conventions by quickly cutting off the possibility of the foreshadowed love triangle. Lizbet puts JJ’s Adultery and Betrayal firmly in the past, and she sees that Mario’s loyalty and goodness merit beginning a new chapter with him, rather than settling for the old relationship she was used to. By eschewing the drama of a love triangle for stable love with a faithful partner, Lizbet affirms that her new-found self-worth is not mere superficial polish but more intrinsic. The public airing of Mario and Lizbet as a couple indicates a new, optimistic era for love, providing a foil to Alessandra’s misguided attempts to secure a rich man. Kimber Marsh and Richie also contribute to this with their romance hatched entirely at the Hotel Nantucket. However, in the latter’s case, Grace witnessing Richie’s mysterious, late-night phone calls foreshadows more plot to be unraveled.
