Jack is an avid “monster photographer.” Using your phone camera or actual digital equipment, walk around your neighborhood and document four to five “monstrous” features. It can be an oddly shaped tree, an animal, or some architectural or natural formation that you consider to be “monstrous” or an aberration from the norm. Then, briefly write a paragraph that explains each documented image and why you believe it is monstrous. If possible, relate it to creatures and objects from The Last Kids on Earth.

7.

June is a very important character in the book, especially since she is the only female on the team. Think of the strongest female in your life and write about how June and that person you’ve chosen relate or contrast. What strengths do they share? How are they different? What defines their best qualities?

8.

Bullying is a big part of this story. But Dirk goes from being a bully to being a good friend and protector. What do you think changes Dirk’s attitude and what allows him to transform himself into a good character? Use examples from the story.

9.

How did the story’s illustrations and cartoons affect your reading? Why do you think the writer decided to hire an artist and include the art? Did you like it? Which was your favorite illustration? Why?

Teamwork, family, and survival are all crucial aspects of Jack’s story. Why is teamwork and family so important to him, and how does it relate to his survival? Identify quotes from the story that support your viewpoint and elaborate on how Jack’s philosophy of teamwork and family influence his desire and ability to survive the zombie apocalypse.
