Chapter 16 Summary: “Outside, Inside”

After losing the halo competition, Suds confides in his mother about his feelings of inadequacy. Even though he congratulated Constantina on her victory, he hesitated when she offered to give him the halo during recess. Ultimately, Suds returned the halo to Constantina, but he admits to his mother that he secretly wanted to keep it, feeling that he has earned it. Suds admits to his mother that he believes his goodness was only superficial. Suddenly, they both hear Mrs. Simms knocking on their door.

Chapter 17 Summary: “Surprise”

Mrs. Simms surprises Suds with a visit at his home, addressing his feelings toward the halo competition. She acknowledges Suds’s disappointment over failing to win and reassures him that he will receive his own halo soon. Suds expresses his surprise that Constantina won instead of Darren, but Mrs. Simms explains her decision. She reveals that Constantina wrote her a letter praising Suds’s kindness and advocating for him to receive the halo first. Despite not behaving as angelically as Suds, Constantina demonstrated humility and selflessness by advocating for him. Suds’s mother is touched by the story and sees Mrs. Simms to the door. Before she leaves, Suds jokingly questions Mrs. Simms about her spies, prompting laughter from both adults and leaving Suds without an answer to his question.

Chapters 16-17 Analysis

At the end of the novel, Suds confronts The Pitfalls of Perfectionism and reassesses his understanding of what it truly means to be an “angel.” Contrary to his assessment of Constantina’s apparent lack of effort, her unexpected victory prompts him to recognize the performative nature of his well-meaning dedication. His conversation with his mother serves as a pivotal moment of introspection in which Suds acknowledges his flawed understanding of goodness and his need for external validation. He confides in his mother about the disparity between the “outside” appearance of his actions and the lack of genuine goodness that he feels “inside.” Despite experiencing conflicting emotions, Suds chooses to act with integrity and humility by declining Constantina’s offer to take the halo. However, even as he outwardly accepts the outcome, Suds still grapples with his disappointment. When he confesses to his mother that he believed the halo should have been his, it becomes clear that he ultimately feels remorseful for harboring such thoughts, and this dynamic exemplifies the very principles that his teacher wishes her students to grasp. This emotional journey highlights his internal conflict and growth as he confronts his own shortcomings and strives to embody the principles taught by his teacher. Suds’s tears signify his realization that true goodness should be felt internally, not merely demonstrated outwardly, and his increased understanding highlights the fact that he has finally internalized his teacher’s Lessons in Morality. Ultimately, Constantina Pappas’s unexpected win serves as a humbling moment for Suds, prompting him to confront how his preoccupation with winning has hindered his ability to appreciate the value of kindness, integrity, and selflessness beyond achieving external praise for personal success.

The resolution of the novel also emphasizes The Impact of Adult Guidance, for the advice of Mrs. Simms and Suds’s mother inspires a new sense of empathy, humility, and integrity in the young boy. By going to Suds’s home, Mrs. Simms demonstrates her genuine care for his well-being and underscores the significance of adult figures in guiding children to understand complex moral concepts. Mrs. Simms’s acknowledgment of Suds’s disappointment and her assurance that he will receive his own halo provide him with much-needed validation and encouragement. Her presence drives home the lessons that she aims to impart throughout the year, while also offering Suds the emotional support he needs to fully internalize them. This interaction therefore allows him to feel seen, understood, and valued, creating fertile ground for his personal growth. Her visit also provides a safe space for Suds to process his disappointment, navigate his complex emotions of jealousy and self-doubt, and ultimately embrace the joy of recognizing another person’s genuine good character. While Suds has already made significant strides in grasping the flaws in his approach, Mrs. Simms’s visit solidifies his newfound awareness, underscoring the important role of caring adults in helping children to navigate the complexities of life and discover the true meaning of goodness.
