Chapter 36-EpilogueChapter Summaries & Analyses

Chapter 36 Summary

Police and paramedics arrive on the scene, and Ava approaches Alex for clarification. While she suspects that Alex’s story about using her as a means to get closer to Michael was at least a partial lie, she needs to know for certain. Ava notes that Alex seems to have regressed, for “[h]e looked like the old Alex again—unruffled and uncaring” (261). Ava wonders whether she ever really knew Alex at all. When she asks if their relationship was real, Alex answers vaguely, “I tried to warn you […] I told you not to romanticize me […] Consider it a lesson for the future” (262). Alex’s scathing words stun Ava into silence, and she sobs on the way home, letting loose every emotion that has been building over the past several months. The part of her that embraces positivity and sees the good in everyone is now gone.

Chapter 37 Summary

Ava leaves, and Alex yearns to follow her, to beg for forgiveness, “to keep her by [his] side for the rest of [their] days so nothing and no one could hurt her again” (265). Alex prevents himself from doing going after her because “[t]he only way to protect Ava was to let her go, even if that meant destroying [him]self” (265). He has never felt his emotions so deeply, and it is agonizing to him.

At the scene of the kidnapping, the only ones who now remain are Alex and his “clean-up team,” a crew masquerading as police officers and paramedics, whom Alex pays to cover up the evidence of questionable activities and incidents. Alex and the team set the house aflame to cover up the killing of Ivan.

Chapter 38 Summary

In this chapter, Josh punches Alex over and over, but Alex doesn’t defend himself; instead, he “welcome[s] the pain. Revel[s] in it. It’s what [he] deserve[s]” (268). When Josh mentions Ava’s name, it pains Alex more than a physical blow. He thinks back to the moment she asked if their relationship was real, and although his answer to her implied that it was not, he knows that the relationship was more real “than [he] ever thought possible” (269). Josh, however, is angry and hurt. He believed Alex to be his best friend, only to discover that Alex had used him for eight years to get revenge on Michael. Josh leaves Alex on the floor of his house. Eventually, Alex gets up and leaves, only to find that it is pouring down rain outside, and the sun is nowhere to be found.

Chapter 39 Summary

Two months have passed, and Ava’s friends coddle her. She has lost interest in many things and instead prefers to spend her days alone or sleeping. On this day, instead of spending the evening with her friends, Ava opts for a nap. When a notification sounds on her phone, she begrudgingly opens an email containing the orientation package for the WYP fellowship in New York City. It’s her dream program, yet she cannot “summon a flicker of excitement at the prospect” (276), which angers her. She is heartbroken when she should be looking forward to the opportunity of a lifetime, and she is “sick of it. Sick of letting men […] have this hold over [her]. Sick of being the object of pitying looks and worried whispers” (277). This anger prompts her to don a swimsuit and visit the college’s pool.

The pool room is empty, and Ava faces her long-standing phobia by getting in the water and swimming alone for an hour. The feat makes her smile. She has relied on others her whole life, but now she is reliant only on herself. Above her, the storm outside abates and a rainbow starts to form.

Chapter 40 Summary

Two and a half months have passed, and Alex has been working nonstop. The Archer Group employees avoid him and his bad moods as much as possible. Ralph visits to tell Alex that he is retiring and moving to Vermont with his wife, Missy. They’re interrupted by Bridget and her bodyguard, Rhys. Bridget reveals that Rhys caught a man following Ava, and the man revealed that he had been hired by Alex to protect her. Alex tries to deny it, but Bridget is convinced that Alex still cares for Ava. She tells Alex that Ava started swimming on her own recently, but that although Ava might seem to be thriving, her signature “spark” is gone.

Bridget continues pushing Alex for explanations about what he did to Ava and what he feels for her until he finally explodes, surprising everyone in the room. He insists that Ava is better off without him, reasoning “I couldn’t protect her. She was hurt because of me. My uncle kidnapped her because of me. And I couldn’t stop him” (289). Bridget reveals that Ava changed fellowship locations and is moving to London. Alex admits that he loves Ava but is terrified at the idea of her traveling halfway across the world alone. With the flight leaving in only an hour, Alex rushes to the airport, but by the time he makes it to Ava’s gate, her plane has already departed.

Chapter 41 Summary

Two weeks after moving to London, Ava is enjoying her fellowship. Alex has resigned as CEO of Archer Group to follow Ava to London, ask for her forgiveness, and win her back. Ava rejects his advances and insists that Alex leave her alone. Alex protectively follows Ava back to her apartment after she refuses a ride home, but she leaves him standing on her front step instead of inviting him inside.

Chapter 42 Summary

Alex shows up every morning at Ava’s apartment to walk her to her fellowship. As the weeks draw on, Alex lavishes her with every form of gift. When Ava insists that Alex stop with the pining, Alex tells her for the first time that he loves her and says, “[M]aybe I still don’t deserve you, but I’m willing to work at it until I do” (305). When Ava continues to reject Alex, he comes close to crying—an emotion he’s never shown—and vows he’ll win her back “no matter how long it takes” (307).

Chapter 43 Summary

The fellowship year has come to an end, and Ava attends an art exhibition with her classmates, in which they all showcase and sell their art. An anonymous buyer has purchased Ava’s entire collection, and she suspects that it must be Alex. In a grand display of emotion, Alex gives a speech and performs a serenade for Ava, showcasing his willingness to display his vulnerability and hopefully gain back her trust. Alex and Ava reunite in the emptied gallery once the night has ended and make amends. Ava admits to herself, “I missed him. Even though I’d seen Alex every day for the past year, it wasn’t the same as touching him and actually being with him” (318).

Epilogue Summary

Ava and Alex spend Thanksgiving with Ralph and Missy in Vermont. Josh has refused to attend; he still hasn’t forgiven Alex for eight years of lies and is angry with Ava over her decision to date Alex again. Alex has been reinstated as CEO of Archer Group following his return to the United States, but his work-life balance is healthier than ever. One evening after work, Alex and Ava, happily together four months after returning to the states, watch the news report on Crown Prince Nikolai abdicating the throne to marry a flight attendant, making Ava’s friend Bridget the heir to Eldorra’s throne.

Chapter 36-Epilogue Analysis

Adhering to the traditional structure of romance plot lines, these chapters illustrate the third-act breakup. In this commonly used trope, the man often breaks off the relationship to protect the woman in some way. In this version of the trope, however, the main conflict of the novel has already been resolved, and the direct sources of Alex and Ava’s childhood traumas have been confronted and overcome. However, the emotional fallout from this intense series of events precipitates their breakup, and during their resulting separation from each other, both characters are forced to grow and develop even further, making bold decisions that alter their lives in dramatic ways. Only when they come back together as two equals can the relationship properly resume.

Romances often feature one or both love interests working on aspects of personal growth to prove that they are ready for a relationship. By allowing Ava to walk away, Alex succumbs to his debilitating fear of failing to protect her. Although his decision hurts her in the moment and he wants nothing more than to keep her close, he instead lets her go for fear that her proximity to him will only put her in future danger. While Alex believes his decision to be selfless, or at the very least, a form of penance, he uses his decision as an excuse to let his fear of The Vulnerability of Intimacy control him. However, Alex ultimately regains control of his own development by using the same endless patience that served him so well in his plans for revenge; this time, however, he redirects that effort and passion toward amending his relationship with Ava in London. Accordingly, Alex first attempts to lavish Ava with gifts at first, but while the gifts are thoughtful, they lack the level of emotion needed to reestablish their connection. To fully regain Ava’s trust and prove that their relationship was genuine, Alex needs to fully embrace his vulnerabilities, and he does so by singing at Ava’s art exhibition, baring his soul in the most vulnerable way possible. Thus, the serenade serves as the vehicle for the last-minute reconciliation between lovers that often dominates the conclusions of romance plots.

In this section, while Alex comes closer to achieving the necessary personal growth, Ava is temporarily halted in her tracks by the impact of Alex’s betrayal. It destroys all that she is and damages the powerful image she has built of herself, creating a moment of regression. However, such a regression is necessary, because most of her development so far has been helped along by Alex, and Ava must ultimately find the strength to do things alone. When Ava faces her fear of swimming solo and then further faces her fear by flying overseas to attend the WYP fellowship in London, she completes her development and fully banishes the issues that held her back throughout the majority of the novel. Her happiness finally rests solely on herself, and she has let go of the need to control the actions and feelings of others, instead becoming content to love herself. These moments of personal success also reaffirm the idea of swimming versus drowning in life. By rising above the currents that have dragged her under since childhood and instead molding her future and climbing toward success in her career and her personal life, Ava is finally learning to swim.

Weather plays a large role in conveying the shifting moods of this section, for the nature of the weather in any given scene provides insight into the tumultuous emotions that drive the plot. After Alex’s betrayal, for example, Ava perceives the weather as being gray and lifeless, matching her own listlessness. Similarly, a storm bears down on Alex as he leaves Ava’s and Josh’s neighborhood after the breakup, evidencing the turmoil he feels at losing Ava. And finally, when Ava faces her fears and changes her fellowship location, a rainbow starts to form, shining like a beacon of hope.

In addition to these understated emotional nuances, Huang also uses the epilogue to show the final snapshot of Alex’s shift in values. His work hours are cut back to give him more time for his personal connections, and he and Ava both openly show affection in front of Ralph and Missy during Thanksgiving. The epilogue also reveals that Josh has not yet forgiven Alex and is now on the outs with Ava because of their rekindled romance, and this conflict suggests that there is still a lot of growing and healing to do. Alex and Ava both experience The Lasting Effects of Childhood Trauma, which they must work through. However, the gathering for Thanksgiving provides a setting that is cheerful and hopeful for the future. Regardless of the issues that still need addressed, and likely will be in future installments, the romance ends in a happily ever after for the two main characters, the most definitive element of the romance genre.
