Letters Between Jacob and Briana and Jacob’s Journal

The written word functions as a key motif in the novel, first seen in the letters Jacob and Briana exchange and then in Jacob’s journal. The written word allows them to communicate in a more honest and vulnerable way than they can in person and helps their relationship weather misunderstandings and conflict. When Briana and Jacob first meet, there is a misunderstanding that is complicated by Jacob’s anxiety disorder and inability to express his thoughts and emotions clearly. For this reason, Jacob writes a letter to Briana, not sure what to expect but needing to find a way to clearly explain himself without interruption or the chaos of a social interaction. When Briana responds by writing him a letter as well, they begin a letter exchange. These letters become their way of connecting, providing them with a safe, anxiety-free place to get to know each other.

As the novel continues, the letters are put aside, but they remain an important steppingstone in the development of this relationship. Therefore, it is appropriate that when Briana has a crisis of trust at the end of the novel and tries to push Jacob away, it is the written word—Jacob’s journal—that pulls them back together again, by convincing Briana to trust Jacob. Through the motif of the written word, the narrative illustrates that Briana and Jacob’s relationship succeeds in large part because they give each other what they need.

Glitter

Glitter is symbolic of Briana’s trauma and the way she tries to handle it. She admits to Jacob that on the day she moved out of the home she shared with her ex-husband, she filled the home with five gallons of glitter. The glitter story gives her a reputation at work, where her coworkers see it as an amusing, if petty, way to get revenge on someone. It has become a joke, when, in truth, it was never funny to Briana. Their divorce leveled more hurt on her than anyone else knows, not only because of Nick’s infidelity but also because of the miscarriage she experienced alone after he left. Briana hides this darkness from the world and presents herself as a woman who is not broken or harmed, turning her heartbreak into a joke. In this way, the glitter is symbolic of the smile Briana presents to the world that is only surface deep.

Code Phrases

The code phrases Briana and Jacob share are symbolic of Briana’s understanding of Jacob’s needs. Whenever Briana and Jacob attend a social event together, Briana gives him a code phrase to say should he feel the need to escape and have a few minutes to himself. Briana intentionally picks words Jacob will find difficult to fit into a casual conversation in order to make him work for what he needs. As time passes, Briana makes these phrases harder and harder, which suggests that she sees that his anxiety is lessening within their relationship and that perhaps he can handle more than he could when they first met. Gradually, the code phrases become tests to allow Jacob to discover how much socializing he can take before he needs a break. In the end, when Briana gives Jacob a code phrase as they prepare to be married, these phrases take on the symbolism of their love and understanding of one another. The code phrases become a manifestation of their promise to “be harmless” to one another.
